Rail booking caution

Egypt Train Guide

Egyptian rail can be useful for Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, the Delta, and Nile Valley planning, but foreigner booking advice must stay conservative until the current ENR booking conflict is resolved.

Last checked: 2026-08-12. No timetable, fare, or foreigner online booking method is frozen on this page.

Current safe position

Do not tell foreign travelers that ENR online booking is verified

  • The official ENR public site remains the first place to check rail information and timetables.
  • The official ENR booking path returned the message that ticket reservation is for Egyptian nationality only and reservation for other nationalities is under construction.
  • Experience Egypt tourism guidance still says schedules and online tickets are available on the Egyptian Railways website for tourists. That is a source conflict, not permission to publish an unverified method.
  • Safe common denominator: foreign travelers should verify the current ENR path on the travel date, use official station/operator channels where available, and avoid any reseller that cannot explain ticket type, passport handling, fees, cancellation, and delivery.

Routes and stations

Plan around the station, not only the train

  • Cairo: Ramses station is the major central rail point and connects near Al-Shohadaa metro. Build in traffic, station entry, platform finding, luggage, and crowd time.
  • Giza: some Upper Egypt trains may be relevant from Giza, but always check the train-specific station before booking transport.
  • Alexandria: train can be a practical Cairo-Alexandria option if the ticket path is verified and your hotel is not far from the station.
  • Luxor and Aswan: rail can avoid airport hops but often turns the day into the journey. Compare a day train, sleeper, domestic flight, or private route using door-to-door time.
  • Remote/desert access: do not use rail as proof a desert or archaeological site is open. Confirm access, operator, permits, road conditions, and return transport separately.

Train types

Match comfort and booking proof to the route

  • Air-conditioned seated trains can make sense for Cairo-Alexandria and longer Nile Valley journeys when ticket purchase is confirmed.
  • Sleeper services should be checked with Abela Trains for current route, cabin, meal, boarding, and booking terms. Treat sleeper trains as an overnight travel product, not a hotel replacement guarantee.
  • Do not publish old train classes, fares, train numbers, or coach claims without same-day ENR or operator verification.
  • Ask before paying whether the ticket is nominative, passport-linked, refundable, changeable, printable, or delivered at the station.

Boarding

Leave time for the human parts of rail travel

  • Arrive early enough to find the platform, ticket office, carriage, seat or berth, porter help if you choose it, toilets, and food or water before departure.
  • Keep passport, ticket, baggage, and valuables accessible. Do not hand documents or bags to unofficial helpers.
  • Large luggage makes stairs, platform changes, and boarding gaps harder. Confirm whether assistance exists for your specific station and train.
  • For night arrivals, know how you will reach the hotel from the station before boarding. Do not rely on a last-minute taxi negotiation after midnight with heavy bags.
  • Families should carry snacks, water, toilet supplies, offline entertainment, and a backup plan for delays.

Fallback planning

Need a rail backup plan?

Mersavia can help compare rail with flights, buses, or a driver fallback after the official ticket path is checked. We do not sell ENR tickets or promise train availability.
