Which airport

Match the airport to the destination, not only the city name

  • Cairo International (CAI): main Cairo gateway for international, regional, and domestic connections. Use the expanded Cairo Airport guide for terminal and arrival detail.
  • Sphinx International (SPX): useful for Giza, west Cairo, and some leisure routes when your airline operates there; ground transfer may be very different from CAI.
  • Hurghada (HRG): Red Sea base for Hurghada, El Gouna, Soma Bay, Safaga, and some onward Luxor/Red Sea plans. Use Hurghada airport transfer only for transfer help, not airport authority facts.
  • Sharm El Sheikh (SSH): South Sinai resort gateway for Sharm, Naama Bay, Nabq, and many Dahab connections.
  • Marsa Alam (RMF): southern Red Sea airport for Marsa Alam, Port Ghalib, and remote reef resorts; confirm transfer distance with the hotel or operator.
  • Luxor (LXR) and Aswan (ASW): Nile Valley airport choices for temples, Nile cruise start/end plans, and Abu Simbel connections.
  • Borg El Arab (HBE): practical Alexandria airport for many travelers; do not confuse it with older Alexandria airport references.
  • Taba (TCP), Marsa Matruh (MUH), Assiut (ATZ), Sohag (HMB), Abu Simbel (ABS), and other airports: verify current scheduled service before building an itinerary around them.

Connections

Do not invent a universal connection buffer

  • Check whether your connection is protected on one ticket or self-connected on separate tickets.
  • Confirm arrival terminal, departure terminal, baggage reclaim/recheck, immigration, customs, security, visa needs, and airline check-in deadline.
  • For domestic-to-international or international-to-domestic journeys, ask the airline whether baggage can be through-checked. EgyptAir currently warns that through check-in is not allowed from international overseas stations to Cairo via domestic stations in Egypt and vice versa.
  • Leave larger buffers when changing terminals, changing airlines, carrying checked bags, arriving late, traveling with children, needing assistance, or using a separate ticket.
  • Check live flight information on the airport and airline site on travel day; screens and gate staff override old screenshots.

On arrival

Follow official airport steps first

A normal international arrival can involve aircraft disembarkation, visa or entry checks where applicable, immigration, baggage claim, customs, airport services, and exit to the public arrivals area. The exact sequence can vary by airport, terminal, nationality, assistance status, and operational conditions.

Ground transport

Airport distance can change the best flight

  • Compare the arrival airport with your hotel or cruise dock, not only the city. A cheaper or later flight can lose value if transfer time is long or unclear.
  • Late arrivals are easier with a hotel-confirmed pickup, official airport transport, or prearranged driver; avoid negotiating with unofficial people in arrivals halls.
  • Families and travelers with access needs should confirm vehicle size, child seats, luggage capacity, step height, pickup point, waiting plan, and how delays are handled before travel.
  • Airport guides can link to existing transfer help, but airport officials and airlines remain primary for security, immigration, customs, terminal, and baggage rules.
