Egypt in 14 Days

Two weeks lets the classic Nile core breathe, then adds either Red Sea rest or Alexandria. Do not stack both as if transfers were invisible.

Assumptions

Traveler, nights, arrival, and departure

Intended traveler: first-time or return visitor who wants the classic route plus one extension.
Pace and season: moderate-slower; hot months require more morning/indoor planning.
Mobility: assumes site walking and multiple hotel moves; access-sensitive travelers should reduce moves.
Arrival/departure: CAI arrival; depart from HRG/SSH for Red Sea variant if flights work, or CAI for Alexandria variant.
Variant rule: Red Sea and Alexandria are alternatives. Combining both needs more than 14 days or major cuts.

Nights

Where you sleep each night

Nights 1-3 Cairo.
Nights 4-6 Luxor.
Nights 7-9 Aswan.
Nights 10-13 Red Sea resort base, or Nights 10-11 Alexandria and Nights 12-13 Cairo/airport-side for the city variant.

Day 1

Days 1-3: Cairo core

Overnight base: Cairo.
Priorities: arrival/rest, Giza/GEM, and one museum/old-city day.
Transfer: no same-day onward flight after a full Cairo day.
Rest window: daily afternoon pause.
End location: Cairo hotel.

Day 2

Days 4-6: Luxor core

Overnight base: Luxor.
Priorities: transfer to Luxor, West Bank depth, Karnak/East Bank.
Transport: domestic flight or verified rail; drivers/guides for site days.
Rest window: midday/pool breaks.
End location: Luxor.

Day 3

Days 7-9: Aswan and Abu Simbel

Overnight base: Aswan.
Priorities: transfer to Aswan, Philae/river context, Abu Simbel as a dedicated long day.
Transport: confirmed road/flight for Abu Simbel.
Rest window: Aswan afternoons.
End location: Aswan.

Day 4

Days 10-13A: Red Sea alternative

Overnight base: Hurghada, Sharm, or Dahab area depending on flights and activity aims.
Priorities: transfer, recovery/rest, two sea/activity days with weather caveats.
Transport: flight or road chosen by route; resort check-in/out may consume the first and last day.
Rest window: built into the extension.
End location: Red Sea hotel.

Day 5

Days 10-13B: Alexandria alternative

Overnight base: Alexandria two nights, then Cairo/airport-side.
Priorities: transfer from Aswan via Cairo, Alexandria overnight, Bibliotheca/Corniche/archaeology, return buffer.
Transport: flight to Cairo plus road/rail to Alexandria only with wide buffer.
Rest window: first Alexandria evening.
End location: Cairo or airport-side hotel before international departure.

Day 6

Day 14: Departure

Overnight base: none unless flight requires extra night.
Priorities: airport transfer and departure.
Transport: terminal/airline-specific check-in.
Rest window: keep the day simple.
End location: departure airport.

Door to door

Transfer timing and connection risk

Door-to-door timings include checkout, hotel-to-airport or station movement, security, waiting, boarding, baggage, arrival processing, onward transfer, hotel check-in, and a delay buffer. Flight, rail, or drive time alone is never treated as total travel time.
Airport moves inside Egypt usually need a conservative 4 to 6 hour door-to-door block for domestic flights and longer when bags, terminals, late arrivals, children, mobility needs, or international connections are involved.
Rail days use wide ranges because ENR schedules and foreigner booking remain a known source conflict; confirm the exact train and purchase path before relying on rail.
The Red Sea extension needs a transfer day and resort recovery. The Alexandria extension needs a Cairo buffer because Aswan-to-Alexandria is not a casual same-day sightseeing move.

Budget drivers

What changes the cost

Cheaper: fewer hotel moves, rail or coach where currently verified for the traveler, public or app-based local transport when luggage and mobility allow, and fewer special-ticket attractions.
Mid-range: domestic flights for the longest hops, private drivers on site-heavy days, a licensed guide where interpretation or pickup complexity matters, and comfortable but not luxury hotels.
More expensive: open-jaw international flights, private transfers for each move, higher-category cruise or resort choices, private guiding every day, special tombs or timed-entry attractions, and flexible cancellation terms.

Alternatives

Faster, slower, heat, closure, and delay versions

Faster version: remove the lowest-priority extension or compress one museum/heritage block only when it does not create a tight same-day long-distance connection.
Slower version: add one night at the place with the heaviest transfer load or the highest heat exposure; do not add more cities first.
Heat-aware version: exposed archaeological sites move to early morning, midday becomes hotel rest, shaded lunch, or indoor museum time, and evenings carry lighter walks or food.
Closure or bad-weather version: substitute an indoor museum, local neighborhood meal, or rest block; Red Sea marine days become shore, pool, museum, or protected-condition alternatives.
Delay version: cut the evening add-on or the second-priority stop first. Do not push every missed item into the next day if that would break checkout, train, flight, cruise, or airport timing.

Critical failure point

What would damage the plan most

Single most damaging failure: extension transfer delay after Aswan.
Recovery: shorten extension by one activity day, not by removing the departure buffer.
