Egypt in 7 Days

One week works best as Cairo, Luxor, and one carefully chosen extension. This version chooses Aswan because it extends the Nile logic without adding a beach detour.

Assumptions

Traveler, nights, arrival, and departure

Intended traveler: first-time visitor who wants the Nile core but accepts that Abu Simbel may need more time.
Pace and season: moderate, early exposed-site starts, midday rest in Upper Egypt.
Mobility: assumes site walking and hotel moves; limited-mobility travelers should slow this to 8 or 9 days.
Arrival/departure: CAI arrival, ASW departure via Cairo or a final Cairo buffer; open-jaw/multi-city assumed.
Same-day risk: no long-distance arrival is paired with a fixed tour that cannot be missed.

Day 2

Giza and GEM

Overnight base: Cairo.
Priorities: Giza Plateau, GEM, simple evening.
Transport: west-side cluster with driver/taxi.
Rest window: lunch or hotel break.
End location: Cairo hotel.

Day 3

Central or old Cairo

Overnight base: Cairo.
Priorities: Egyptian Museum or NMEC, Coptic Cairo or Islamic Cairo, one food/evening context.
Transport: one city side, not both old-city clusters.
Rest window: midafternoon pause.
End location: Cairo hotel with bags ready.

Day 4

Cairo to Luxor

Overnight base: Luxor.
Priorities: safe transfer, check-in, Luxor Temple if timing allows.
Door-to-door: 5 to 7 hours by domestic flight, longer by rail with ENR conflict preserved.
Rest window: hotel arrival.
End location: Luxor hotel.

Day 5

Luxor West Bank

Overnight base: Luxor.
Priorities: Valley of the Kings, one West Bank second site, rest.
Transport: driver/guide.
Rest window: midday hotel/pool.
End location: Luxor.

Day 6

Karnak and Luxor to Aswan

Overnight base: Aswan.
Priorities: Karnak early, then transfer to Aswan.
Door-to-door: checkout, station/road/airport transfer, journey, arrival, hotel check-in; keep the afternoon flexible.
Rest window: Aswan hotel arrival.
End location: Aswan hotel.

Day 7

Aswan and departure

Overnight base: none unless adding buffer.
Priorities: Philae, river context, departure.
Transport: boat transfer for Philae plus airport/station buffer.
Rest window: lunch or hotel lobby.
End location: ASW or Cairo buffer hotel.

Door to door

Transfer timing and connection risk

Door-to-door timings include checkout, hotel-to-airport or station movement, security, waiting, boarding, baggage, arrival processing, onward transfer, hotel check-in, and a delay buffer. Flight, rail, or drive time alone is never treated as total travel time.
Airport moves inside Egypt usually need a conservative 4 to 6 hour door-to-door block for domestic flights and longer when bags, terminals, late arrivals, children, mobility needs, or international connections are involved.
Rail days use wide ranges because ENR schedules and foreigner booking remain a known source conflict; confirm the exact train and purchase path before relying on rail.
Luxor-Aswan is a half-day door-to-door transfer even when the train or road segment looks short. Abu Simbel is not included because it would make Day 7 fragile unless an extra night is added.

Budget drivers

What changes the cost

Cheaper: fewer hotel moves, rail or coach where currently verified for the traveler, public or app-based local transport when luggage and mobility allow, and fewer special-ticket attractions.
Mid-range: domestic flights for the longest hops, private drivers on site-heavy days, a licensed guide where interpretation or pickup complexity matters, and comfortable but not luxury hotels.
More expensive: open-jaw international flights, private transfers for each move, higher-category cruise or resort choices, private guiding every day, special tombs or timed-entry attractions, and flexible cancellation terms.

Alternatives

Faster, slower, heat, closure, and delay versions

Faster version: remove the lowest-priority extension or compress one museum/heritage block only when it does not create a tight same-day long-distance connection.
Slower version: add one night at the place with the heaviest transfer load or the highest heat exposure; do not add more cities first.
Heat-aware version: exposed archaeological sites move to early morning, midday becomes hotel rest, shaded lunch, or indoor museum time, and evenings carry lighter walks or food.
Closure or bad-weather version: substitute an indoor museum, local neighborhood meal, or rest block; Red Sea marine days become shore, pool, museum, or protected-condition alternatives.
Delay version: cut the evening add-on or the second-priority stop first. Do not push every missed item into the next day if that would break checkout, train, flight, cruise, or airport timing.

Critical failure point

What would damage the plan most

Single most damaging failure: Luxor-Aswan transfer delay.
Recovery: keep Philae only if departure allows; otherwise add a night or cut Aswan sightseeing.
